Transportation Manager & Driver (School Bus)

Indianapolis, IN

Full-Time | Exempt | On-Site (Indianapolis, IN)

Department: Transportation Services

Reports To: Director of School-Based Services

Lead with Purpose. Build a Transportation Program that Drives Impact.

At John Boner Neighborhood Centers, we know that safe, reliable, and community-centered transportation is foundational to access and opportunity. We’re seeking a Transportation Manager who brings not only technical knowledge and compliance expertise—but the leadership and decisiveness needed to manage daily operations, guide a team, and ensure every route serves our mission.

This is not a driver role with some admin duties. It’s a supervisory leadership position ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-moving, multi-faceted environment where oversight of staff, reporting, route development, and compliance are the top priorities. If you're energized by process improvement, empowered decision-making, and supporting a diverse community through transportation—you’ll thrive here.

A Day in the Life

You’ll spend your day overseeing and supporting the day-to-day functions of JBNC Transportation Services, LLC—from coordinating daily driver assignments and monitoring on-time performance, to ensuring compliance with DOT regulations and organizational protocols. You’ll supervise both Drivers and Dispatchers, conduct performance check-ins, and ensure your team is well-trained and fully certified.

You’ll collaborate across departments to plan service coverage, create efficient route schedules, manage vendor relationships for vehicle maintenance, and submit reports for internal stakeholders and grant requirements. While you may occasionally serve as a backup driver during emergencies, your focus will be on building and maintaining a high-performing transportation program—with safety, efficiency, and community service at its core.

You Will Thrive in This Position If You Have:

  • 2+ years of supervisory experience in a transportation setting, including oversight of Drivers and Dispatchers
  • Strong decision-making ability and comfort solving problems independently, without needing to escalate every issue
  • Proven experience creating and coordinating transportation routes, including schedule optimization and compliance oversight
  • In-depth understanding of state and federal transportation regulations, particularly DOT rules
  • Experience with grant or compliance reporting, data documentation, and vendor management
  • A commitment to equity and community-centered service, especially in diverse urban environments
  • Experience using or learning technology tools such as routing software, Outlook, SharePoint, Excel, and ETO

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid CDL-B license with both “P” (Passenger) and “S” (School Bus) endorsements
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of transportation experience, including 2 years of transportation supervisory experience
  • Working knowledge of DOT standards and transportation safety protocols
  • Must maintain a safe driving record and current certifications
  • Ability to assist passengers in and out of vehicles, including individuals with mobility devices
  • Physical ability to sit for extended periods, lift moderately heavy objects, and work in all weather conditions
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or split shifts as needed

Additional Requirements Upon Hire:

  • DOT physical exam
  • TB test
  • Fingerprinting and background check
  • Drug screening and ongoing random testing
  • Active CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)

If you’re ready to bring structure, accountability, and vision to a transportation program that supports hundreds of lives across the Near Eastside, we want to hear from you.
